The Biohazard Solution in the San Antonio area

3/10/2020 (Permalink)

Dealing with a crime or trauma is undoubtedly difficult. Unfortunately, biohazards can linger at the scenes of these events, creating the potential for serious health consequences if they are not properly eliminated.

You can protect yourself from the physical aftermath of a traumatic situation by calling SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig (210) 610-6800 for bio-hazard cleanup.

The Purpose

Blood-borne pathogens, various biohazards, crime scene residues and dangerous chemicals often remain even after the initial crime or trauma.

SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig's professional restoration experts trained in biohazard cleanup have specialized training and equipment. The training allows us to safely remove any toxic material and restore normalcy to the area.

Their expertise is important for people struggling to deal with the repercussions of a variety of unpleasant experiences, including:

Crimes and accidents

Suicides, homicides, injuries, and deaths

Sewage backups

Methamphetamine labs

Chemical spills

Hoarding

Vandalism

Animal waste or remains

The Process

When cleaning a scene, professionals create three distinct zones with biohazard tape and plastic sheeting. The clean area provides a place for them to store their equipment, reducing the risk of cross-contamination. The buffer zone offers a secure area for them to do their personal protective equipment. The actual scene that needs to be cleaned in San Antonio is referred to as the control zone.

Once the sections have been established, restoration professionals get to work, eliminating bio-hazards using a three-step process. In the cleaning phase, they remove blood, biological materials, dirt, and chemical residues. They also take out any materials that cannot be salvaged, disposing of them as medical waste. The sanitization phase comes next. Here, technicians spray a sanitizing foam over any affected surfaces. This foaming is repeatedly done until adenosine triphosphate fluorescence testing verifies that the area has been thoroughly sanitized. In the final phase, technicians use deodorizing agents to remove any odors.

At SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig, we understand the emotional and practical challenges involved in dealing with a crime or trauma scene. Our professional technicians have the empathy and expertise needed to tackle biohazard cleanup and restoration situations. Following the protocols established by both the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), we can remove the risks inherent in these scenes and restore a safe environment in your home or business. Call (210) 610-6800 today to discover more about our services or request professional assistance.

Safe Disposal Options for Smoke Detectors:

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

The radioactive material in a smoke detector can become a problem, if the detector is not properly disposed. Smoke detectors placed in the trash or burned will release their radioactive material into the environment. This holds true for any chemical or potentially hazardous material, which is why proper disposal is very important.

The life expectancy of smoke detectors is about 10 years, after this their sensors can begin to lose sensitivity. You can find the manufacturer date on the back of your smoke detector. Be sure to remove the smoke detector from the wall or ceiling to check the date of manufacture. Replace the smoke alarm with a new one if the unit is more than 10 years old or the test alarm does not work.

You can return your old or unneeded smoke detector to the original manufacturer for disposal as hazardous waste. The brand name and/or address can be found on the back of the device or in the user’s manual. After removing the battery, return the entire unit intact with a note indicating that the device is intended for disposal. Detectors should be mailed by surface mail or UPS Ground so they don’t travel by airplane

Call SERVPRO For Your Commercial Sewage Backup Disaster

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

Flood damage can occur in many forms for a San Antonio home or business. The worst occurrence might be a sewage backup and the safety hazards it brings.

Sewer backups in the San Antonio area can happen due to a blockage in a main drain or sewer line. If a toilet is being treated as a waste basket or a grease is poured down the drain, clogging occurs, inciting possible home and commercial sewer backups. Tree roots are another common cause as they grow into pipes and holes with available space. As with any potential water disaster, irregular maintenance to broken or cracked pipes and lines are all conditions contributing to sewer backup damage.

Regardless of the source, a sewer backup in your San Antonio home or business means sewage cleanup. City and town sewages are shared and can encompass a multitude of biohazard contaminants. Immediate cleanup and decontamination is necessary to mitigate any long-term damage caused by a sewage emergency. Health concerns are evident, both airborne and water-borne. Sitting water also leads to damaged infrastructures, allowing the opportunity for mold to grow. After safely evacuating anyone inhabiting the property at that time, calling a restoration services company in the San Antonio area to survey the emergency flooding, is essential to keep your business running. Often property owners may make the costly error of attempting to fix the root issue themselves. This can be dangerous health wise and cause further destruction.

Disaster Restoration companies like SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig, are properly trained and equipped to remove, dispose, and clean any biohazard properties caused by a sewage backup. Clean up may include any removal, drying, dehumidifying or disinfecting of sheetrock, drywall, carpet, tile or furnishings. As harmful microorganisms are a major concern when dealing with biohazard material, safety suits and equipment are a mandated standard.

Our Experienced Team Can Help You

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

The water loss remediation industry continuously devises new equipment that takes a San Antonio property from soaked and deteriorating to dry and clean faster and more efficiently. As amazing as innovative tools are, it takes a crew of seasoned and highly-qualified technicians to use them to the best effect. Professional water remediation companies deliver their best outcomes when the workers pledge to train and recertify on a regular basis.

When you face water damage in your home, you benefit from cutting-edge equipment and crews who know how to operate them according to industry standards. Even diehard do-it-yourselfers recognize that managing water incursions is a tricky business, requiring not only hard work but also a solid understanding of the science behind water removal and structural drying.

Developing professional expertise to mitigate water damage is why SERVPRO sends our crew members to the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification (IICRC) classes. The IICRC is a standard developing and establishing organization worldwide. Skills taught to the employees we sent to remediate and restore your home base their effectiveness on research.

An example of a task that might seem straightforward enough to be within the grasp of every homeowner is carpet water extraction. The equipment resembles a shop vac, and a homeowner typically feels comfortable operating a vacuum. Why SERVPRO requires crew members to complete a comprehensive IICRC course in carpet cleaning relates to the problems that can occur if standards are unknown or ignored.

The art and science of extracting water from carpeting or other floor coverings are not intuitive. An effective way to pull moisture out of a carpet is with a weighted wand extractor. SERVPRO IICRC-trained technicians learned and practiced the techniques that extract moisture without putting stress on the textile floor covering. Inexperienced individuals can stretch the carpet fabric by exerting too much pressure or moving too quickly across a surface. Inappropriate force might cause delamination of the carpet backing from the carpet face.

Community Fire Safety Tips: Business & Home

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

Though some fires are unavoidable acts of nature or unpredictable accidents, many fires in the home and workplace are avoidable. The following tips, courtesy of the National Fire Protection Association, can help reduce the likelihood of a fire in your business or home.

  1. Watch your cooking. Stay in the kitchen if you are frying, grilling or broiling food. Never allow young children around the stove or oven, especially if they are not closely attended.
  2. Give space heaters space. Keep space heaters at least three feet from anything that can burn.
  3. Smoke outside. If you must smoke inside, have a sturdy, deep ashtray. Never smoke in bed.
  4. Keep matches and lighters out of reach. Keep matches and lighters in high cabinets, preferably under a child lock.
  5. Inspect electrical cords. Replace cords that are cracked, damaged, have broken plugs or have loose connections.
  6. Be careful when using candles.  Keep candles at least one foot from anything that can burn. Blow them out before you leave the room or go to sleep.
  7. Have a fire escape plan. Make a fire escape plan and practice it at least twice a year.
  8. Install smoke alarms. Install alarms on every level of your office or home and inside bedrooms. Interconnect them so they all sound at once.
  9. Test smoke alarms. Test alarms once per month. Replace batteries once per year or as needed.
  10. Install sprinklers. Sprinklers can help maintain and sometimes even extinguish fires, giving your local fire department a better chance of saving you properly.

Keeping Your Restaurant Kitchen Clean and Safe

2/14/2020 (Permalink)

A busy restaurant is a joy, and a challenge. It’s wonderful that you have so much business and that your patrons love your food. But keeping the kitchen in great condition on a daily basis can seem like an almost impossible task, but it’s of vital importance to pass those Health Department inspections!

So much is going on during the day, hot grease spitting, utensils loaded with food dropped on the floor, glasses breaking, and food being burned or ruined due to human error. A regular cleaning system can help keep a handle on the mayhem, and keep your restaurant kitchen clean and safe.

It is vital to maintain a hygienic commercial kitchen. Your grills should be brushed between cooking different types of meat, such as red meats, poultry, and fish. The line and prep areas should be regularly wiped down, and trash should be emptied BEFORE it overflows. Slipping and tripping in the kitchen could lead to a disaster. Make sure your sanitizing water is maintained and that there is always a sufficient supply of cleaning rags throughout all shifts.

At the end of the day, the fryers will need to be thoroughly cleaned, as will the grills and the steam table, all slicers, floor mats, and surfaces. Grease traps need to be emptied and cleaned, and hood filters should be run through the dishwasher. Sweeping and mopping the floors, including cooking areas and walk-in fridges and freezers, and cleaning all floor mats well will set the kitchen up for success for the next business day. Your work space in your kitchen will be clean and safe!

Weekly you will want to sanitize coolers and coffee machines, clean ovens and floor drains well, and sharpen all knives. Clean and well-cared for tools and machinery will keep your kitchen safe for your staff. These tasks can be part of servers’ side work, to ensure that they get done.

Monthly you should see that thermometers and ovens are calibrated, freezers deep-cleaned, and behind all ovens, stoves, and fryers gets deep-cleaned as well, as grease build-up is a major fire hazard. Keep your first aid kit well-stocked in case of accidents.

At least once a year, schedule a visit from a professional cleaning company you trust. They can clean hoods and drains, grease traps, walls and floors, much more thoroughly than your staff, and can inspect your premises for possible kitchen safety and fire issues.

SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig is ready to help in the area of restaurant kitchen safety and cleanliness. Give us a call today at (210) 610 6800!

Escape Plan for Your Business

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

An emergency escape plan is not required for all businesses, however, OSHA recommends building an emergency action plan to protect yourself, your employees, and your business during an emergency. OSHA suggests the following steps when developing such a plan:

  1. Organize an Emergency Preparedness Procedures review with employees to review your company's emergency plans. You may wish to select an individual or team of individuals to lead and coordinate your emergency plan.
  2. Once a plan is developed, post evacuation procedures, including routes and exits, where they are easily accessible to all employees. Ensure all exits and routes are clearly marked and well lit, wide enough to accommodate the number of evacuating personnel, and unobstructed and clear of debris at all times.
  3. Conduct office evacuation exercises and drills. Designate a safe spot outside of the facility where employees can regroup, recover and conduct a head count. Once completed, evaluate how well the plan worked and if additional training or exercises are needed.

These tips are provided by the National Fire Protection Association and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

House Mold: Types and Solutions

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Mold growth is typical in a variety of climates and homes. There is no shame in having experienced these types of problems. However, while not uncommon, mold comes in all shapes, sizes and species, and it can be beneficial to understand the kinds of household molds and how to prevent or treat them, ensuring a safe and clean living environment for you and your family.

1. Food Mold

Food mold is likely the most common type of mold, and most people experience it as bread mold. You may look in your bread drawer one day, and everything is fine, but the very next day you see areas of green and black blotches on some of the pieces. This type of growth is natural and likely unrelated to any particular underlying problems in your home.

2. Surface Mold

Another common type of house mold is surface mold. As the name implies, the mold growth is restricted to the surface of an object. This type of mold may be remedied quite easily by using certain over-the-counter cleaners. However, it is essential to make sure that the mold issue is indeed surface and does not penetrate the drywall or framing.

3. Mold Infestations

A mold infestation typically occurs in areas with significant water damage or spaces with high humidity levels. Unfortunately, a problem like this usually requires deep penetration of the structure to ensure that the area is clear of the infestation before restoration.

4. Mold Remediation

Whether you only suspect a problem or have the water damage to prove one, it is beneficial to call a mold remediation specialist in the San Antonio, TX area. Mold can be invasive and dangerous. Specialists are certified and capable of remedying your problem quickly and efficiently without risking the safety of you or your family.

Mold growth is common in homes, and while food mold and surface mold are relatively simple and easy fixes, mold infestations can be dangerous and present a more substantial risk to the integrity of your home. When dealing with large mold problems, it is likely best to hire a professional.

Banishing Shower Mold - 3 Handy Tips

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Black mold anywhere in your home is bad news, but it can be particularly troubling in your shower. After all, nobody wants to imagine moldy organisms growing in the very place where one cleans off! The bright side is the black stuff is not something you have to just live with. If you’re looking for tips to banish bathroom and shower mold in your San Antonio, TX home read on.

Reviewing Bathroom Mold

In general, mold tends to thrive in places that are dark and wet, making the bathroom, which is typically dark most of the day and often full of water or steam, the perfect environment. Other things that make a bathroom a mold magnet include:

  • Improper ventilation
  • Broken grout
  • Repeated exposure to water (i.e., shower curtains)

Now you know some of the causes for black mold. Here are a few ways to clear it up.

Remove Your Caulking

The caulk sealing up your shower is one of the easiest places for shower mold to thrive. Water can get into little crevices that appear in caulk as it ages. Those wet, dark crevices are perfect for mold. Fortunately, removing caulk is as easy as peeling it away and applying new caulk from a hardware store.

Re-grout Your Tiles

Mold especially loves to grow on grout, which cracks and becomes more porous as it ages. Unlike re-caulking, replacing grout is a more labor-intensive process that’s best left to professionals who can spot issues behind the grout and ensure the best, mold-preventative seal.

Replace Your Shower Curtain
Many tutorials provide homemade mixtures for cleaning mold from shower curtains. But for the best result, you may want to just toss shower curtains out periodically. Problem solved.
Shower mold is nothing to sniff at. It’s unsightly and can cause health problems. Use these tips or hire a mold remediation company to get the black stuff out and your bathroom spic and span.

What to do Until Help Arrives After a Fire

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

WHAT TO DO UNTIL HELP ARRIVES

DO:

  • Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.
  • Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls, and woodwork.
  • Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery, and carpet traffic areas.
  • If electricity is off, empty freezer and refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.
  • Wipe soot from chrome on kitchen and bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.
  • If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and to tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.
  • Wash both sides of leaves on house plants.
  • Change the HVAC filter, but leave the system off until a trained professional can check the system.
  • Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig is a team of specialists, trained to professionally clean your home and personal belongings. If you experience a fire in your San Antonio home or business, give us a call at (210) 610-6800.

Mold and Rainy Days

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

What do mold, wet weather, and your home have in common? If you're like most San Antonio, TX homeowners, you might say these three are a recipe for disaster. Since black mold and other pesky fungi thrive with moisture, just a few rainy days can result in a months'-long cleanup process. Continue reading to learn about the factors that allow mold to grow.

1. Household Items That Attract Mold

Whether it was a light spring shower or a heavy downpour, that rain from the night before is likely still lingering in parts of your living space. Water-soaked items can easily become home to black mold and other unwelcome guests, so keep a close eye on cardboard boxes, books, drywall, and other permeable materials that mold can easily thrive upon.

2. Trapped Moisture That Promotes Further Growth

When items aren’t dried out immediately after the rain, any moisture that sticks around can provide the perfect lair for mold. An unaddressed moisture problem can prolong mold growth throughout your home. When high humidity enters the picture, you may be dealing with a mold utopia on your own turf.

3. Leaky Roofs That Make Your Home Vulnerable

A roof in need of repair is certainly not an ideal situation for a homeowner. However, tackling a mold cleanup issue early on can help you avoid bigger obstacles down the road. You may not realize it, but just one damaged patch or two can allow your roof to trap moisture inside. Over time, the dampness can extend beyond your home’s insulation and into interior walls. Although drying up a few spots is never a bad idea, you may need to call on the maintenance experts to get a proper inspection. Depending on the extent of moisture’s damage, your home may need a new roof altogether.

Don’t let black mold — or any kind of fungal foe — get in the way of enjoying your home. Use these mold cleanup tips to address the moisture problem head-on. Nature’s elements may be powerful, but the right mold prevention strategies can prove even stronger.

Let SERVPRO Put The Flames Of Worry Out In Your San Antonio Home After A Fire

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Unattended Candle vs Living Room Curtains = Fire Damage in San Antonio

Candles are one of the most frequent culprits for fire damage in living rooms. Left unattended, they post a risk of loss especially for furnishings, window treatments and electronics.

SERVPRO worked on fire damage in a Converse living room caused by a candle. The homeowner regularly burned them and was only out of the room a short time talking with a neighbor at the end of her driveway when she saw smoke pouring out of her garage doorway. The fire was extinguished quickly using a home fire extinguisher, but the area around a window including the curtains was a loss.

SERVPRO arrived within hours and asked the homeowner to turn off the HVAC to stop soot from cross-contaminating other areas of the home through the ductwork. Then while a team of technicians removed the contents too charred to restore from the room, another technician contained the damaged area to stop the spread of soot and odors. The residue left behind by the fire extinguishers was quickly vacuumed up and removed.

Technicians set up high-velocity exhaust fans to speed ventilation in the living room and then began the process of cleaning the smoke damaged area. The homeowner had a high gloss enamel paint on her walls, and this did not allow smoke to penetrate but instead spread across the surface where it was easily cleaned using our professional-grade solutions.
Odor control is never a one-size-fits-all solution. Often the application of multiple methods is necessary to neutralize odors. An air scrubber lowered but did not eliminate the residual odors left behind in the carpeting and a chair that was close to the fire. So the technician chose to use a thermal fogger eradicate the remaining smoke odor, which uses a deodorizing solution delivered as a hot fog that overtakes odors in porous or absorbent items. We also inspected and cleaned the ducts to ensure the odor did not return when the HVAC was back on.

We know when you have fire damage, you need help quickly. SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig has emergency response teams available 24-hours a day by calling (210) 610-6800, and our technicians can make it "Like it never even happened."

Tips for Keeping Your Vacant Renta Property Mold-Free

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Mold loves dark, damp and stagnant areas. Vacant apartments often create the perfect environment for mold growth. As a property owner in San Antonio, TX you want to keep your buildings at their best to ensure you can rent them when an opportunity arises. If you have an empty commercial space or rental unit, you need to learn more about mold prevention.

• Work With a Team: A commercial mold remediation team can not only help you clean up mold damage but also help you with mold prevention. This team of experts may be able to give you tips on how to avoid growth. Some teams may even conduct regular inspections to ensure the prevention has been working.
• Turn Off Water: If no one is occupying the space, chances are you do not need the water to be on. Turning off the building's water can help you eliminate one major area of concern—water damage. When the water is off, you don't have to worry about pipes bursting or toilets flooding.
• Maintain Heat: You may want to turn the heat off in your vacant spaces. However, stagnant air can encourage mold growth. Instead, you should turn the heat down but keep it at a consistent temperature. This not only helps keep the air moving, but it can also help you maintain the humidity level in the apartment.
• Let Light In: If possible, you should keep the curtains of a building open. Light can help discourage the growth of mold. If you cannot let natural light in, you may want to visit the space regularly to shed some light on the area. This can also give you a chance to walk around the property and make sure you don't see any signs of mold.

Mold prevention requires you to think ahead. What type of problems could lead to mold growth? Once you answer this question, do everything you can to stop those problems from taking place.

3 Reasons Flooding in Commercial Buildings Should Be Addressed ASAP

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Commercial buildings are some of the most challenging spaces to maintain year after year in San Antonio, TX. Avoiding high humidity and fixing sources of water damage as soon as possible are essential steps toward preventing the need for major restoration. Here are three reasons why time is of the essence when remediating damage from mildew, mold growth and excess moisture.

1. Preventing Fungal Growth

Remediation specialists categorize water into three general groups: clean, gray and black. Clean water is considered uncontaminated and is fit for human consumption, while gray water includes wastewater from home or offices, excepting that which is contaminated with feces (example sources might include sinks, washing machines or sprinkler systems). Black water is the most contaminated category; water caused by storm-related flooding belongs to this group.

However, while black water's high pollution content makes it the most problematic to clean up, even clean water provides the moisture needed to prompt rapid mildew and mold growth. This can happen within 12 to 24 hours after the flooding event.

2. Minimizing Restoration Costs

The longer that excess water is present, the more time it has to seep into drywall, insulation and porous structural elements of the building. Stopping the source of flooding, removing water and thoroughly venting affected spaces as soon as possible is crucial for preventing damage from spreading to other areas and minimizing restoration needs after the fact.

3. Preserving Electrical and HVAC Systems

Moisture and standing water also pose a risk to electrical equipment, and fungal and bacterial contaminants can quickly take foothold in HVAC systems, even when these systems have not been submerged in floodwaters. These ventilation systems in turn can spread bacterial and fungal material throughout the building, diminishing air quality and making future mildew issues much more likely.

Whether you have noticed a relatively minor leak that has caused visible water damage or mold growth or your building has experienced a flooding event, a professional remediation company should be able to assess damage risks and draw up an immediate plan of action.

Outlet Fire in Universal City, TX

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

We were called out last week to a homeowner who luckily found this happening next to one of her outlets. She called the fire department immediately, and fortunately, there was no fire active behind the wall. The electrician arrived onsite at the same time as SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig. This scenario was one of the first times that the electrician has seen this happen.

What happened was that there was a mouse behind the wall eating the wire to that outlet. As you can see, it caused a fire to go down the main electrical line in the wall.

Unfortunately, the only way to keep an eye out for this is to walk around your house and check the outlets for any possible melted spots or black soot coming out of them. It is essential to be aware that this is a possibility.

Dealing with your fire-damaged home in Universal City, TX can be taxing and tiring, however, it doesn't need to be overwhelming. As a team of professionals with extensive experience in the smoke and fire damage restoration field, SERVPRO's skilled technicians can provide you with the detailed, results-driven services you need to restore your property, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (210) 610-6800.

Eliminating Heating Hazards This Winter

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

The winter season is in full swing! The days are shorter, and temperatures are lower. No matter where you live, winter brings a change in weather. To keep our homes and workplaces cozy, many people use alternative heat sources like fireplaces, portable space heaters, and wood burning stoves. According to the National Fire Protection Association, heating equipment is responsible for an estimated $893 million in property damage annually. Heating is the second leading cause of residential fire deaths, making it important to review ways to help reduce the risk of a heating-related fire.

-Keep anything flammable at least three feet away from heating equipment, like the furnace, fireplace, wood stove or portable space heater. Have a three foot "Kid-free zone" around open fires and space heaters.

-Remember to turn portable heaters off when leaving the room or going to bed.

-Always use the right kind of fuel, specified by the manufacturer, for fuel burning space heaters.

-Make sure the fireplace has a sturdy screen to stop sparks from flying into the room. Ashes should be cool before putting them in a metal container. Keep the container a safe distance away from your home.

-Have heating equipment and chimneys cleaned and inspected every year by a qualified professional.

-Have a qualified professional install stationary space heating equipment, water heaters or central heating equipment according to the local codes and manufacturer's instructions.

Smoke Alarms Save Lives

Smoke alarms play a vital role in saving lives, and when properly installed, can reduce the risk of fire injury in half.

The National Fire Protection Association recommends smoke alarms be install in every bedroom, outside all sleeping quarters and on every level of the house. Business owners should consult the local Fire Marshall to ensure specific building fire codes and smoke detectors requirements are met.

Smoke alarms work best when paired with a fire escape plan. A plan allows your family, employees or client to escape quickly and safely in an emergency.

Review the following tips regarding smoke detector installation and maintenance.

-Install smoke alarms on every level of the home including the basement.

- Smoke alarms should be installed away from the kitchen to prevent false alarms. Generally, they should be at least 10 feet from a cooking appliance.

-Test smoke alarms at least once a month using a test button.

-Replace batteries in all smoke alarms at least once a year. If an alarm "chirps" the battery is low and should be replaced right away.

-Replace all smoke alarms when they are 10 years old.

Three Ways to Avoid Water Damage When You're Not Home

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

No matter what time of year it is, if you’re going to be away from your home for an extended amount of time – even just over night – it’s a smart idea to turn off your water until you return home. Why? Because it doesn’t take very much water to cause a whole lot of damage! If your pipes freeze and burst while you’re gone, or if a washer hose ruptures or a supply line leaks, major water damage can occur! There are a few things you can do before heading out of town to give you peace of mind when it comes to the state of your home’s water.

Shut off the Main Water Valve

Your safest bet is to turn off the main water valve. Make sure the adults in your home know where the main shutoff valve is and know how to turn it on and off. (Knowing this will also come in handy if you’re at home during an emergency, so the water can quickly be shut off!) Locate the main water valve near your water meter usually located in the basement, near the front of the house, attached to the outside of the home’s exterior, or in an underground box in the yard.

There are two types of main shutoff valves. You’ll probably find what’s called a “gate valve” if you’re in an older home. Turn the rounded handles a certain number of times to open or close the valve. The “ball valve” is more common today. Turn the lever-like handle 90 degrees in order to turn the water on or off. If this valve crosses the pipes, it’s closed; if it’s parallel to them, it’s open.

Test shutting off the valve ahead of time by locating the main shutoff valve, turning it off, and running a faucet. If no water comes out, you’ve successfully turned off your home’s water supply!

Turn off Individual Water Valves

But what if you’re leaving during the summer and you can’t turn off your entire water supply because you have automatic sprinklers? If this is the case, you can simply turn off individual water valves to the water sources with the highest damage risk. These sources include the dishwasher, washing machine, and ice-maker. Individual shutoff valves tend to be located directly on the supply lines leading to most appliances, including toilets and faucets. Usually, this will be a small rounded handle that you’ll turn clockwise. Doing this will turn off the water to that source. (Take note that the ice-maker shutoff valve may be under the sink or in the basement!)

If you’ll be shutting off individual water supplies, it’s a good idea to kill two birds with one stone and check your supply lines themselves. They can become weak over time, resulting in leaks, cracks, or bulging. If you notice these or other forms of corrosion, you may want to repair or replace them before leaving.

Turn off Water Supply to Outdoor Faucets

If you’re leaving during the colder seasons, it’s a good idea to also shut off the water to your outdoor faucets as well. Their shutoff valve will most likely be located inside your house. Shut it off before you head out the door. Once you’ve shut off the valve, turn on the exterior faucet to drain any excess water. And remember to detach the hoses, too!

If you follow these simple steps, you can rest easy knowing your home won’t be at risk of water damage while you’re away!

Water Damage From a Burst Pipe

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Water Damage in San Antonio from a Burst Pipe Should be Promptly Addressed

A burst pipe can cause significant water damage in a home.  Water leakage can also be terribly expensive, possibly causing personal schedule changes and insurance claims. Additionally, mildew and mold can become a problem long after the initial damage. Thankfully, there are experts in water damage that can help the problems from a burst pipe be much more manageable.

Leaking Pipes

Pay attention to leaking pipes! Diligence can minimize the collateral damage from a burst pipe. Pay attention to where water has leaked. The water and moisture may have already caused a small amount of damage. Call a professional to determine the best course of action as soon as possible. An inexperienced homeowner attempting to fix the problem may just make it worse.

Preventing Structural Damage

The possibility of structural damage is the key reason homeowners should be extra vigilant regarding the plumbing in their homes. Structural damage may be difficult to spot. You should always contact an experienced contractor such as SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig to assess possible structural damage from leaky or burst pipes.

Mold Hazards

Mold is another serious problem that stems from water damage. Mold can be particularly vexing to homeowners. Because mold is living, it can grow and fill large portions of a home without the homeowner being aware. Eventually, mold can lead to structural damage. Mold can be in basements, laundry rooms, and kitchens. Mold removal can be a very difficult task once a foothold has been secured.

Additional Considerations

The above factors illustrate how complicated the ramifications of a burst pipe can be. A homeowner should not attempt to deal with any of these issues without the assistance of an expert well versed in water damage repair and mold remediation. The skills needed to deal effectively with mold, structural damage, and leaking pipes are beyond the average homeowner. Homeowners that attempt these tasks quite often worsen the existing problems. It is always best to hire an expert to inspect the damage after experiencing a burst pipe. SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig has the experience as a full-service water restoration company to rectify and repair all the problems related to a burst
pipe.  Solving the problem of a burst pipe correctly will protect the investment of your home for years to come.

Storm Restoration

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

Hitting golf balls on the range? Enjoyable. Golf ball sized hail hitting your windows? A disaster. The weather around San Antonio is unpredictable and can sometimes have a devastating impact on your home. Although you can’t stop the weather, we can limit the amount of damage done by violent storms. Here are a few tips for preparing for a storm:

  • Trim the trees, wind could knock down any lose or dead branches
  • Secure the backyard, any furniture or objects left outside should be secured and ready to endure heavy winds
  • Clean the gutters, if gutters stay full they could become clogged and cause water to seep in under the roof
  • If flooding is a concern, move poisons or garden chemicals kept outside to above ground level and that important items inside are kept in a safe place
  • If there’s a large hail warning, consider boarding your windows and staying in the room with least amount of windows

If, even after all these precautions, mother nature still managed to cause a mishap let us take care of it for you. At SERVPRO® of Universal City / St. Hedwig we are open 24/7 and can assess and fix the damage in no time. "Like it never even happened."

Storm Damage Doesn’t Just Involve Rain Flooding

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

When you think of storm damage to a commercial building, you typically think of flooding. Yet a burst pipe during a winter storm can cause just as much destruction to your San Antonio, TX business.
A pipe typically bursts when it freezes in cold weather. The below pipes are the most susceptible to freezing:

  • Pipes in unheated areas such as cabinets and basements
  • Pipes that run against outside walls
  • Outdoor pipes exposed to extreme cold

Once the frozen pipe bursts, it can spray water onto the floors and your equipment. Even if you are able to turn off the water supply immediately, you will still be left with standing water that can cause mold growth or other problems. That is why you should take steps to prevent a burst pipe.

Protecting Your Pipes

The main way to protect your pipes from freezing and bursting is to keep them insulated. Try wrapping pipes with heat cable, tape or even newspaper.
During the cold weather months, you should let the water drip from the faucets throughout the day. You should also set the thermostat to at least 55° Fahrenheit at all times.

What To Do When You Have Frozen Pipes

If you notice that only a small amount of water is coming out of your faucet, you may have one or more frozen pipes. Thankfully, you may be able to correct the problem before you suffer a burst pipe.
First, you should keep the faucet in question running, as this will help to thaw the frozen section of the pipe. You can then use a hair dryer, space heater or electric heating pad to warm up the pipe. If a pipe does burst before you can thaw it, your local storm cleanup and restoration specialists can assess and repair the flood damage.
When making an emergency preparedness plan for your business, do not just think about rain flooding. In order to avoid major flood cleanup, you need to protect your pipes from cold temperatures.

5 Tips for Flood Safety

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

When you live in San Antonio, TX flood safety can be very important for yourself, your family and your home. Both before and after the storm. When the rain is gone, you may find that some clean up and repairs are necessary on your property. Here are a few safety tips you may want to follow during the restoration process.

1. Proceed Safely

Proceed as safely as possible when assessing any flood damage to your home. This means not entering any unsafe areas, and taking the appropriate safety steps before beginning work.

2. Turn Electricity Off

Always turn the electricity off to any flooded area before entering. Doing so can help you prevent any number of safety hazards.

3. Wear Protective Gear

Another important step for flood safety is the use of proper protective gear. This may include coveralls, masks, gloves, and boots or shoe covers. Any items worn in the flooded area should also be washed in hot water to help avoid contaminating the rest of the home.

4. Contact a Professional

When possible, it's best to contact a water damage restoration service to conduct repairs on your home. These experts will know what is best to be done to get your residence back in livable condition as quickly as possible.

5. Sanitize Everything

Sanitation is an important step the restoration process. This will help ensure that no bacteria remains on any object touched by the flood water, and that nothing is brought back into the home after restoration is complete.
When it comes to your home and family flood safety is important both before and after the storm. Following these tips may help. Remember to turn electricity off and wear protective gear in any area you are working. It may be best to contact a professional to handle the repairs. You may also want to be sure that everything is properly sanitized before returning it to your home.

How to Prevent Water Damage

1/7/2020 (Permalink)

Even though some water fiascos are completely unavoidable, there are some preventative measures you can take to help avoid water damage in your home and prevent costly repairs.

The Top 3 Ways to Prevent Water Damage

  1. Properly Storing Valuables

As mentioned above some storms and leaks you cannot predict, but the best way to prevent water from destroying your belongings is with proper storage. We recommend going through your home and storing your valuables such as photo albums, books, or old toys in plastic storage bins so they are safe from water!

  1. Seasonal Cleaning

Throughout the year, it’s tempting to throw unused items into the basement or garage. But when a big flood appears, you might not have time to clear these rooms out. To avoid potential water damage from ruining your items, clean before storm season approaches.

  1. Gutters

Properly functioning gutters are essential during storm season because they help guide water away from the home and foundation. Clogged gutters can spell disaster. Without anywhere to go, the water will backflow into your home, potentially causing significant water damage. Make it a priority to regularly clean gutters and have them professionally maintained throughout the year.

Appliances and Water Damage

Water on the floor in the kitchen Call SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig today at (210) 610-6800!

Any of your appliances connected to a water line could potentially cause water damage. One of the most frequent problems that we see is water damage from a leaky refrigerator. Unlike other types of water damage, this can happen over a long period of time without the homeowner noticing it, since the damage is hidden under and behind the fridge.

If you have the ice maker connected to the water line, make sure the line fittings are secured. Check water valves and defrost drains for leaks or cracks. If the fridge has a clogged defrost drain, the water will leak into the lower compartment of your fridge and run onto the floor. Condensation could be another reason why water is pooling around the fridge, since it can run down the walls and into the floor. The best way to avoid dealing with water damage cause by your fridge is to regularly check and maintain the appliance.

Smoke and Soot Damage in San Antonio, TX

1/7/2020 (Permalink)

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Bathroom Remodeling After Mold Damage

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

When mold infests a San Antonio home, the damage and the restoration costs can vary widely. If caught quickly after the mold begins growing, both are minor, and the emphasis stays on cleaning and removing mold from surfaces. If the mold has had months to grow unnoticed, then the focus can shift to removal and replacement of affected property, both personal and structural.

When this happens, San Antonio homeowners have a unique opportunity for remodeling their homes, especially the bathroom. SERVPRO technicians can remove the tiles, shower, bathtub, and other bath items, and replace them at the direction of the homeowner.

Mold rarely penetrates tile surfaces, but it does grow into the grout material that seals the tiles in place. The same material also forms a seal between pieces of a shower or bathtub unit, keeping water from leaking or seeping in behind them and causing further damage from wood rot. SERVPRO restoration teams train to remove the grout and tiles carefully.

If mold has grown into the walls behind the tile, our teams can remove and replace those as well. After removing the affected drywall, specialists spray the framing behind them and the surrounding area with an anti-fungal agent to make certain no live mold spores are still present.

Before installing the new panels, the teams use a combination of air movers and fans to increase circulation and dry out the bathroom to reduce the chance of mold growing again. If the interior humidity is very high, they augment these devices with a dehumidifier to draw water from the surrounding air.

With a new wall, it is a perfect time to replace the tiles, or even replace the entire bathtub and shower area with a one- or two-piece, drop-in unit. Technicians can make many of these changes at the homeowner’s discretion, but for very expensive replacement items, the team leader always recommends using the manufacturer’s installation team to set and seal them in place.

A mold infestation is something no homeowner wants to happen in their residence. Cleaning and replacing affected property can be an opportunity to upgrade the home, however. If this is your situation, call SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig at (210) 610-6800 today to begin restoration.

How a Leaky Fridge can Create a Huge Headache for Homeowners

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

Open Refrigerator We are here to help! (210) 610-6800

You should check to see if there are any sings of water damage around your appliances every couple of months.  A leaky fridge can create a lot of problems for the homeowner if it goes unnoticed for an extended period of time. If you see excessive moisture around the appliance, call an expert to determine the source and how extensive the damage is. Get it fixed as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

A small drip can damage the wall making the paint peel or bubble. Sheetrock becomes bloated and warps over time.

A slow drip can create major problems under laminate and tile floors and could affect the sub-flooring. This can also affect the cabinets around the appliance. Particle board cabinets are extremely prone to water damage. In some cases, it may be necessary to refinish or replace some cabinets.

If you see dark stains or mold on the walls or floors, call a professional that specializes in mold remediation. You can purchase a water leak detection alarm and place it behind the appliance. Depending on the brand, you can get a notification on your mobile device alerting you if a leak is detected.

The team at SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig has specialized training and more than 10 years of experience in water damage restoration. Call us today at (210) 610-6800!

What does Catagory 1, 2 and 3 Water Mean?

1/3/2020 (Permalink)

One of the first things our water technicians learns while training is the difference between Category 1, 2 and 3 Water and how to treat each damage.

Category 1 Water just means it is clean water and it does not pose a risk if a person comes in contact with it. It could be from faucets, water fountains, the bathtub. Category 1 water can change to category 2 or 3 if it comes into contact with other sources, surfaces or materials.

Category 2 Water or “gray water” damage come from toilet bowls with urine, washing machines, dishwashers, and sump pump failures. This type of water contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants.

Category 3 Water or “black water” is the most dangerous type of classification. It is extremely unsanitary, since it contains pathogenic, toxigenic and many types of harmful bacteria. This type of water could cause sever illnesses or even death if ingested. Sewage backup, flooding, standing water and ground surface water are categorized as 3.

SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig is available 24 hours a day and has the knowledge and experience to deal with any of these categories for water. Call us at (210) 610-6800 and let us handle this disaster for you!

How to Protect your Pets in Case of a Home Fire.

8/22/2019 (Permalink)

Gunny, our office dog, is standing safely outside of a commercial building with a fire truck in the background. Here you can see Gunny is standing safely outside while our first responders safely put out a fire.

We love pets here at SERVPRO! For many of the homes we visit the animals are a part of the family but many people do not have a fire safety plan for themselves and their critters. For general fire safety use this post to add emergency pet procedures to your plan.

Planning on how to handle your pets in the event of an emergency can prevent a member of your family or an emergency worker from going back into an unsafe situation. If evacuating your home during a fire here are some steps that you can take before and during to be as safe as possible:

-Stay calm and do not panic, your pet will hopefully take your lead.

-Be sure to call for your pet

-Have a leash or cat carrier easily accessible

-Rescue alert stickers tell emergency workers how many and what kind of animals are in your house and typically also have a space for the name and number of your veterinarian.

-Know your pets hideaway spot, if they are scared they will go there. Mark those places on your fire escape plan map

-If you must leave before you evacuate leave a door open or some other kind of outdoor access available. Call your pets name when you get out and with luck they may head for your voice.

Some general pet related safety tips are:

-Keep all records of shots and vaccinations in a firebox

-Have an emergency bag handy with emergency veterinarian contact, pets food, snacks, water, medications and toys for comfort.

-Talk to your veterinarian about what your pet might need for a first aid kit.

-Microchipping your pet is a more permanent form of identification in case you lose track of them

How to Get the Smell of Cigarette Smoke Out of Your Home

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

Have you just moved into a home or apartment with a strong nicotine smell? There are some home remedies to try, but these will only work under certain circumstances. There are many questions to consider, like how long the cigarette smoke has been impacting the area, how strong the smell is, and where the smell is concentrated.

If the home remedies are unsuccessful, it is best to send a professional out to inspect it. Once we can establish the extent of the damage, we begin to plan action steps for ridding the home of the stench. Often nicotine residue can cling to the HVAC system, so a full duct cleaning could be the answer to residual odor that seems to outlast other odor removal methods. If the ducts have been cleaned, then we will ozone the affected areas. We will bring it air scrubbers to remove the airborne contaminants and control the air quality during the restoration and cleanup process.

After the ozone process is complete, we will use a thermal fogger, which uses a special solvent-based deodorizer that is heated and applied as a dry fog/smoke. Thermal foggers rely on a deodorizing solution that is vaporized in the fogger then blown into the room permeating all of the contents and structural elements. This process will ensure that the nicotine odor is gone for good.

If you have more questions or would like to schedule an odor assessment, give us a call at (210) 610-6800.

Are Mold Remediation and Mold Removal the Same Thing?

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

Mold cleanup is referred to as remediation rather than removal for a scientific reason: you can’t get rid of mold spores. The naturally occurring, microscopic entities are present everywhere indoors and outdoors. Once black mold or any other colony has grown in your establishment, mold remediation must immediately begin in order to limit the spread of the mold. While each situation is unique, here are six general steps a professional cleanup and restoration company will take to rid your San Antonio, Tx business of its fungal presence:

1. Inspection

Mold remediation experts will assess the property for noticeable signs of mold. A variety of technology can be utilized to detect the subliminal signs of mold, often found behind interior walls or under carpeted floors.

2. Containment

The HVAC system and fans will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold spores through airways. The contaminated area will be closed with technology tactics and physical barriers to contain the mold within a restricted area.

3. Filtration

Possible irritants contained in black mold can spread to the surrounding air. Using advanced filtration technology, workers will capture the microscopic spores to filter air during the cleanup process.

4. Removal

Dependent on the amount of mold growth some building materials may have to be removed and disposed of. Porous materials such as carpet, drywall or wood can retain the moisture and spores that led to the original mold growth. For safety and prevention of returning mold, materials damaged by black mold must be removed.

5. Cleaning
In-depth cleaning of restorable items includes specialized cleaning methods, disinfection and sanitizing and thorough drying. Any lingering odors can be removed with fogging equipment.

6. Restoration

Full restoration minimizes the threat of mold returning through thoroughly cleaning and drying effected materials. However, significant mold damage could require replacement of drywall, subflooring or other porous building materials that could retain mold spores.

For more information on Mold Remediation Call SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig at (210) 610-6800.

• Review basic hygiene procedures.
• Invest in personal protective gear.
• Train your employees on disease prevention.

• Remove soiled work clothes as soon as you’re done cleaning and before you do anything else or go anywhere else.
• Do not chew gum or smoke tobacco while handling sewage or human waste.
• Invest in dry cleaning to thoroughly clean contaminated clothes.

Protective Personal Gear You Need

Knowing how and when to clean your hands and clothing is not enough. You also need to know how to handle contaminated water or, more importantly, what gear you need to safely do so. Equipment you will need includes these items:

• Rubber boots and gloves
• Liquid repellent coveralls
• Goggles
• Protective face mask

Conduct the Proper Training

Though you should always rely on a professional San Antonio, TX, water remediation team for content cleanup, it doesn’t hurt to train your workers in safe techniques and basic hygiene practices. A portion of training should focus heavily on when to seek medical attention and recognizing signs of waste-borne illnesses.

If you’re dealing with a flooded company, the best thing you can do for you and your employees’ safety is hire a San Antonio, TX, remediation team. The professionals are properly trained and have adequate protection.

Why Mold Might be in Your Home!

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

In Your Property, SERVPRO Remediates Mold Damage

Homes of all shapes, sizes, and locations share some common enemies, one of the chief ones being mold infestation. Mold spores are naturally occurring almost everywhere on Earth, but given the right conditions for growth, can multiply exponentially and cause major problems for your home. Some types of mold may even cause health effects. Here are some of the conditions and causes for a mold infestation in your home.

Damp or Wet Fabric and Wood
Mold damage in Bexar County typically needs two things to get pressing: wet conditions and an organic food source. Both of these are often found in homes, where outside water can seep in, or a leak can cause wooden floors, walls, and structural elements to soak up water. Additionally, fabrics such as carpets, drapes, and shower curtains are also commonly affected. An important step we take in halting any mold colony's growth and preventing future ones from forming is dehumidification, whereby we take almost all the moisture out of a room and its air. We reduce the RH, relative humidity.

Dark, Warm Areas
Some types of mold can only grow in dark areas, and preferably in warm places. Unfortunately, residences also commonly provide this environment, and many mold colonies end up growing behind walls or in attics and basements. These are some of the first places we check for moisture and mold when responding to any call to a home, via moisture sensors, hygrometers, and infrared devices.

Spoiled and Forgotten Food
Spoiled food almost always grows mold at some point; most people know that. However, if not disposed of, this food can be a catalyst for future growth elsewhere in the home. Once matured, mold colonies release large amounts of spores which travel across a home through the air, and these may take up residence in another room or the ducts. This is one reason why we offer mold remediation rather than removal: it is impossible to rid a home of mold spores entirely, due to there being so many and their tiny size. Once again, they are naturally occurring, and so will be found in your home regardless.

Expert in mold remediation and cleanup, SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig is a tried and true solution to any mold problem, large or small. With proper accreditation, certification, and training for all of our crew members, we feel confident we can tackle your residential mold problem. Call us today at (210) 610-6800 for 24/7 emergency service.

Are you Prepared for Severe Weather in San Antonio?

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

Preparing For Severe Weather

Are you ready if San Antonio severe weather strikes your area tomorrow? Where you live will determine the type of storms you’re most likely to face. Follow these safety measures and general tips to help you prepare.

Preparing for a Tornado

While tornadoes can occur in any of the states, there's a reason the region from Texas to South Dakota is called Tornado Alley. San Antonio tornado season occurs during spring and summer.

Do the Following:

  • Follow the NOAA Weather Radio, commercial radio or TV newscasts. Obey the instructions given by local emergency officials.
  • Keep watch outside for signs of a tornado, like a dark sky, large hail, low-lying or fast-moving clouds, or roaring sounds.
  • Learn to recognize emergency alerts. The phrase "tornado watch" means a tornado is possible, while "tornado warning" means a funnel cloud has been spotted.
  • If a tornado warning is issued, immediately take shelter in the basement or storm cellar. If your home doesn’t have an underground room, hunker in an interior bathroom.

Preparing for a Thunderstorm

San Antonio thunderstorms are dangerous because they always produce lightning and can produce hail, strong winds, flash floods, tornadoes and wildfires. Thunderstorms can occur anywhere in the US and are most common during the summer.

Do the Following:

  • Prepare your home by shuttering windows and doors, and unplugging sensitive electronics.
  • Prepare your property by removing damaged tree branches that could fall during a storm, and bringing outdoor objects inside.
  • Watch the sky and tune in to your NOAA Weather Radio for information.
  • Learn to recognize emergency alerts. A "severe thunderstorm watch" means stormy conditions are likely to occur. A "severe thunderstorm warning" means they exist somewhere in the area.
  • If a severe thunderstorm warning is issued, danger is imminent. Seek shelter immediately. Stay in a hard-topped vehicle if there are no buildings.

Information Regarding Floods

2/20/2019 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters here in the United States.

Fema.gov reports that in the last 5 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods. Just because you haven’t experienced a flood in the past does not mean you won’t in the future. In fact, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas, and even just one inch of flood damage in an average home can cost you up to nearly $27,000.

According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather-related disaster. The American Red Cross offers the following flood safety tips:

  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go another way.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground.
  • Keep children out of the water.

Important Storm Information

2/12/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig wants you to be prepared for when a storm takes place. Be aware that we will contact you 1 hour after notice of loss to arrange for service. We will be on-site to begin mitigation services within 4 hours of notification. We will also provide verbal briefing of scope to you within 8 business hours of on-site arrival.

Below, we have guidelines for you that we think is highly important:

Before the Storm

  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.

During the Storm

  • Use your battery-operated NOAA Weather Radio for updates from local officials.
  • Avoid contact with corded phones. Use a corded telephone only for emergencies. Cordless and cellular telephones are safe to use.
  • Avoid contact with electrical equipment or cords. Unplug appliances and other electrical items such as computers and turn off air conditioners. Power surges from lightning can cause serious damage.
  • Avoid contact with plumbing. Do not wash your hands, do not take a shower, do not wash dishes, and do not do laundry. Plumbing and bathroom fixtures can conduct electricity.
  • Stay away from windows and doors, and stay off porches.
  • Do not lie on concrete floors and do not lean against concrete walls.
  • Avoid natural lightning rods such as a tall, isolated tree in an open area.
  • Avoid hilltops, open fields, the beach or a boat on the water.
  • Take shelter in a sturdy building. Avoid isolated sheds or other small structures in open areas.

After the Storm

  • Stay away from downed power lines and report them immediately. Watch your animals closely. Keep them under your direct control.
  • If you have storm damage to your home or property, call SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig. Timely mitigation is key to minimize secondary damages caused by severe storms.

Children & Fire Safety

2/6/2019 (Permalink)

Here at SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig, we believe that is important for children to know what to do when a fire occurs.

  1. Go to a firefighter in an emergency. Young children may be scared the first time they see a firefighter in full gear. Explain to children:
  • What firefighters wear and why.
  • How a firefighter can help if there is a fire..
  1. Crawl low under smoke.
  • Tell children that some fires make lots of smoke, which is dangerous to breathe.
  • Show them the safe way to respond when a room fills with smoke: get down on your hands and knees, keep your head up, and crawl outside.
  • Ask children to practice with you.  Lead them in crawling across the room with their heads up. Repeat frequently to help children remember this important safety strategy.
  1. Stop, drop, and roll. When children’s clothes catch fire, their first reaction may be to run. This can make the fire spread faster. Show children the safest way to respond:
  • Stop, cover your face, get down on the ground, and roll from side to side until you smother the fire.
  • Ask children to practice with you a few times and then split them into pairs. Children can take turns demonstrating to their partners. Repeat frequently to help children learn to stop, drop, and roll automatically.
  1. Tell a grown-up.Tell children that matches and lighters are tools that only adults use.
  • Tell children that they should not play with or even touch these materials.
  • Explain that if they find a match or lighter, they should tell a grown-up immediately.
  • Role-play with children in small groups about what to do when they find these types of materials.

Is There Mold In Your Air Ducts?

2/6/2019 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig wants you to be aware of mold in your air ducts.

Since the ventilation systems is often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality, inspecting the ductwork should be a high priority. In most cases, the HVAC system has been operating for some time without attention. Dirty ducts can circulate odors, contaminants such as mold, and irritating dust throughout your building or home.

The process begins by using patented equipment including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct's shape and diameter while traveling though the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.

  • Next, a powerful push-pull air delivery and collection system transfers the debris from the ducting to a 16-gallon container.
  • Air is filtered through a HEPA filtration system, removing 99.97% of particles in the airstream. HEPA filters capture debris and keep the environment clean.
  • As an optional process, a sealant or coating product may be sprayed to address odor or microbial concerns.
  • Filters will either be cleaned or replaced to remove odor and dirt.

The Top 5 Commercial Water Damage Prevention Tips

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial building owners and tenants should try to prevent damage from any water source. This type of damage may disrupt the functionality and undermine the safety of a property in San Antonio, TX. Whether you are a commercial building owner or tenant, here are five water damage prevention tips to follow.

1. Protect the building envelope. The envelope or exterior of a building include the windows, walls, and roof. Make sure that water does not penetrate through any of these parts of the structure.

2. Approach landscaping and location from a strategic perspective. The situation of a building can be an essential factor to keep in mind when selecting or designing a commercial property. Water tends to flow downhill and should drain away from the foundation of the building.

3. Maintain HVAC systems. If the HVAC system in a commercial property is dated, it may not be as efficient or capable of meeting the demands of recent buildings. Condensate drains and drain pains should lead away from the structure and occupants should try to prevent clogs and water damage. Roof drains should drain away from the structure. Ductwork should not have any indications of condensation, excess moisture, or rust.

4. Regularly inspect rooftop drainage. If a roof cannot drain completely, pooling water may work its way under roofing materials, causing damage and undermining the integrity of the roof. Ensure that downspouts and drains are clear and that there is no standing water on the roof.

5. Have plumbing components inspected on a regular basis. It is important to check major connections, particularly water main supply lines. Look for any signs of leaks or broken pipes.

These tips limit the likelihood of water damage in a commercial property in San Antonio, Tx. If damage does occur, keep contact information for a plumber and commercial restoration company, like SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig, that provides water cleanup services on hand.

3 Reasons To Hire Certified Water Damage Experts

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Give SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig a call if you experience a water damage in your home or commercial property. (210) 610-6800

Certified companies that specialize in water cleanup are likely to hold an Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, a Commercial Structure Drying credential, or a Mold Remediation certification. The standards for these credentials are set by experts in human health and structural restoration. Here are three reasons why you should hire a certified water damage expert if you experience a broken pipe, leaky roof, or sewer flooding.

Insurance companies are more likely to cover the costs of certified commercial restoration. Insurance companies typically trust certified professionals to perform water cleanup and damage repair work more quickly and with greater success than services without up-to-date cleaning and restoration certifications.

Certified companies are also more likely to guarantee their work.

Certified experts can work efficiently after water damage. Every second counts when you are dealing with water damage. Regardless of the source of the leak, it is important to remove standing water and to clean, dry, and dehumidify the parts of a commercial property affected by a leak as quickly as possible. Significant damage can occur and mold may begin to develop in 24 to 48 hours if experts do not complete drying and cleaning procedures.

Less secondary damage occurs when certified experts follow best restoration practices. Just as mold is less likely to develop if the affected area is quickly dried and cleaned, the extent of water damage to building materials or content may be less severe if experts arrive on the scene in a timely manner.

If your commercial property in San Antonio, TX has experienced water damage, you should call a certified water damage restoration service to schedule water cleanup as soon as possible. Check the website of the service you are thinking about hiring or contact the company by phone to find out which cleaning and restoration certifications it holds.

Visit http://www.SERVPROuniversalcitysthedwig.com/ for more information on water damage and to look at all of our company certifications.

What Makes Mold Grow in My House?

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Give SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig a call if you notice mold growing in your home. (210) 610-6800

You probably wish mold would grow anywhere but in your home. Unfortunately, black mold seems to have other ideas, and happily gravitates toward the interior of your San Antonio home. So just why is your house so attractive to mold, and what can you do to stop it?

You Probably Have a Moisture Problem.

Actually, there’s no “probably” about it. Mold needs moisture to grow. Before it becomes the unsightly fuzzy patches of black mold that you know and hate, mold exists as invisible spores in the air. Those spores are essentially dormant until they come in contact with moisture, at which point they begin the next developmental stage and become the dreaded black mold infestation. Common sources of moisture include:

• Standing water from flooding

• High humidity in your environment

• Broken water mains

• Broken pipes

• Leaking roofs and windows

• Condensation from broken environments

Any one of these problems can be enough to trigger an explosion of black mold inside your home. Getting rid of the moisture can help to halt the spread of mold, but it’s not enough to get rid of the mold entirely.

So How Do You Handle Mold Cleanup?

The safest option is to contact a mold remediation specialist. Mold remediation specialists possess the tools and expertise needed to not only safely remove mold from your environment, but help you prevent it from reoccurring. Working with a mold specialist can help you understand the type of mold that has taken root in your home, and can often lead to identifying water damage or other issues that had previously gone undetected until the mold problem began.

While waiting for the specialist’s help, though, you can get a head start on disposing of contaminated materials and drying out waterlogged items. Do everything you can to contain the mold infestation and prevent it from spreading further until it can be destroyed.

  • Mold growth occurs mostly in warm and damp surfaces under humid conditions
  • Mold is hard to see since it grows in hidden areas like under the floors, under the ceiling carpet and in walls.

Drywall removal due to Hurricane Harvey

SERVPRO knows how important it is to remove contaminated drywall quickly before microbial growth begins to grow. Waters filled with bacteria and unclean particles swept through this home due to the hurricane. Storm waters are often considered to be at least a category 2 water when caused by a hurricane (water travels through unclean areas within cities, neighborhoods, etc). In the picture below, SERVPRO of Universal City technicians removed affected drywall and manipulated our equipment to promote drying within this home. SERVPRO ensures that homeowners are well taken care of by completing demolition that needs to be done, then beginning the drying process, and once that is complete, antimicrobial is applied to the affected areas.  This customer was very satisfied with the job that was done in this home and thankful that we were able to respond during a catastrophic event.

Do You Know What To Do When a flood Happens?

4/12/2018 (Permalink)

Floods are one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether your home or business is near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river, or even in the desert—there is always potential for flood damage. Fema.gov reports in the last 5 years, all 50 states have experienced floods or flash floods. Just because you haven’t experienced a flood in the past does not mean you won’t in the future. In fact, nearly 20% of all flood insurance claims come from moderate-to-low risk areas, and even just one inch of flood damage in an average home can cost you up to $27,000.*

According to the American Red Cross, floods cause more damage in the U.S. every year than any other weather related disaster. The American Red Cross offers the following flood safety tips.

  • Stay away from floodwaters. If you come up on a flowing stream where water is above your ankles, stop, turn around, and go another way. Six inches of swiftly moving water can sweep you off of your feet.
  • If you approach a flooded road while driving, turn around and go another way. If you are caught on a flooded road and waters are rising rapidly around you, get out of the car quickly and move to higher ground. Most cars can be swept away by less than two feet of moving water.
  • Keep children out of the water. They are curious and often lack judgment about running water or contaminated water.

If a flood does strike your home or business, contact SERVPRO® of Universal city / St. Hedwig at (210) 610-6800. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. Teaching Children About Fire Safety

2/26/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Prevention Week was established to remember the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which began on October 8. Use these worksheets, activities, and lessons to teach your students/child(ren) about fire safety and prevention. Prepare your students/child(ren) for emergency situations with worksheets and literature on fire readiness. October is Fire Prevention Month, but any time of the year is appropriate to enjoy these resources.

Please visit: https://www.teachervision.com/emergency/teacher-resources/47554.html

1. Go to a firefighter in an emergency. Young children may be scared the first time they see a firefighter in full gear. Explain to children

  • What firefighters wear and why.
  • How a firefighter can help if there is a fire.

Contact your local fire station to arrange a tour. The children can learn about equipment and become familiar with what firefighters look like and what they do. Or invite firefighters to your classroom so they can put on their gear in front of the children, explain their jobs, and answer children’s questions.

4. Tell a grown-up. Emphasize to children that matches and lighters are tools that only adults use.

  • Tell children that they should not play with or even touch these materials.
  • Explain that if they find a match or lighter, they should tell a grown-up immediately.
  • Role-play with children in small groups about what to do when they find these types of materials.

Do you have mold in your duct work?

2/26/2018 (Permalink)

Sweeping Away years of Dust and Dirt- Reducing Potential for Damage and Health Risks

The SERVPRO Proven Duct Cleaning System is Cost Efficient

  • The process begins by using patented equipment including a roto-scraper, which automatically adapts to the duct's shape and diameter while traveling though the duct, removing debris and filth before vacuuming begins.

Floods Strike Everywhere!

Floods rank as one of the most common and widespread natural disasters in the United States. Whether you live near a coastline, along city streets, in the mountains, near a river or even in the desert, there is a potential for suffering flood damage. In fact, nearly 25% of last year’s claims paid by the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) were for policies in moderate to low-risk communities.1 According to the NFIP, houses in the United States have a 26% chance of being damaged by a flood during the course of a 30-year mortgage, while businesses face similar risks by flooding.1 On average, floods cost $6 billion in annual losses in the U.S. The following are a few more little-known flood facts:

  • Floods kill an average of 140 people per year in the U.S., making flooding the most deadly natural disaster.
  • More than half of all fatalities during floods are auto related, often the result of drivers misjudging the depth of water on a road and being swept away in a swiftly moving current.
  • The principle causes of floods in the eastern United States are hurricanes and storms.
  • The principle causes of floods in the western United States are snow melt and rainstorms.

If a flood does strike your home or business, give SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig a call. Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming task. SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig is prepared to handle any size disaster and help make it “Like it never even happened.”

Watch vs. Warning

A severe thunderstorm watch means that the potential exists for the development of thunderstorms which may produce large hail or damaging winds. A watch is issued by the SPC (Storm Prediction Center).

A severe thunderstorm warning means that a severe thunderstorm is occurring or is imminent based on Doppler radar information or a reliable spotter report. A warning is issued by the local National Weather Service office.

Watch vs. Warning and Storm Basics are provided by NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). For more information visit their website: www.noaa.gov

Storm Basics

A thunderstorm is a rain shower which you hear thunder. Since thunder comes from lightning, all thunderstorms have lightning.

A thunderstorm is classified as "severe" when it contains one or more of the following:

  • Hail (One inch or greater)
  • Winds in excess of 58 mph
  • Structural wind damage
  • Tornado
  • Tornadoes are arguably nature’s most violent storms. Generated from powerful thunderstorms, tornadoes generally appear as rotating, funnel-shaped clouds extending from the cloud base to the ground. With winds that can reach up to 300 miles per hour, tornadoes can cause massive destruction within seconds. Damage paths can be in excess of one mile wide and fifty miles long.
  • Tornado Facts
  • The average tornado moves southwest to northeast, but tornadoes have been known to move in any direction.
  • The average forward speed of a tornado is 30 miles per hour, but may vary from stationary to 70 miles per hour.
  • Tornadoes can accompany tropical storms and hurricanes as they move onto land.
  • Tornadoes are most frequently reported east of the Rocky Mountains during spring and summer months.
  • Tornadoes are most likely to occur between 3 p.m. and 9 p.m.
  • Before the Storm
  • To begin preparing, you should build an emergency supply kit and make a family communication plan.
  • Remove dead or rotting trees and branches that could fall and cause injury or damage during a severe thunderstorm.
  • Postpone outdoor activities. n Remember the 30/30 Lightning Safety Rule: Go indoors if, after seeing lightning, you cannot count to 30 before hearing thunder. Stay indoors for 30 minutes after hearing the last clap of thunder.
  • Secure outdoor objects that could blow away or cause damage.
  • Get inside a home, building, or hard top automobile (not a convertible). Although you may be injured if lightning strikes your car, you are much safer inside a vehicle than outside.
  • Remember, rubber-soled shoes and rubber tires provide NO protection from lightning. However, the steel frame of a hard-topped vehicle provides increased protection if you are not touching metal.
  • Shutter windows and secure outside doors. If shutters are not available, close window blinds, shades or curtains.
  • Unplug any electronic equipment well before the storm arrives.
  • During the Storm
  • Avoid contact with anything metal—tractors, farm equipment, motorcycles, golf carts, golf clubs, and bicycles.
  • If you are driving, try to safely exit the roadway and park. Stay in the vehicle and turn on the emergency flashers until the heavy rain ends. Avoid touching metal or other surfaces that conduct electricity in and outside the vehicle.
  • After the Storm
  • Never drive through a flooded roadway.
  • Stay away from storm-damaged areas to keep from putting yourself at risk from the effects of severe thunderstorms.
  • Continue to listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or to local radio and television stations for updated information or instructions, as access to roads or some parts of the community may be blocked.

Black Water

1/31/2018 (Permalink)

Category 3 water, although referred to as Black Water or Dirty Water is not always visually black or dirty.

In the restoration industry there are three categories of water and as industry professionals it is our job to determine which category of water each damage has. The most severe category is Category 3 which is also commonly called CAT 3, Black Water or Dirty Water. Category 3 water (Black Water) is highly contaminated water that is potentially toxic to anyone inside the dwelling.

The water is considered category 3 (Black Water) if it meets any of the following criteria. Sources include sewage backup, flooding from rivers or streams, toilet overflow with feces or stagnant liquid that has begun to support bacterial growth. If Category 1 or Category 2 has been left untreated for more than three days, it is likely that it will develop into Category 3 (Black Water). If your damage is deemed as Category 3 (Black Water), it is likely that many pieces of your property will need to be replaced. Anything porous, such as furniture, carpeting and drywall is grossly contaminated. Category 3 water, although referred to as Black Water or Dirty Water is not always visually black or dirty. In fact, most times it is completely translucent.

If you are ever faced with damage to your home act fast, find your source and call the professionals at SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig. We will assess the damage and ensure that it is properly mitigated to ensure your safety.

Understanding Content Coverage

1/31/2018 (Permalink)

The best way to determine if you have enough content coverage is to conduct a home inventory.

Everyone has homeowners insurance right? It’s one of those things you have and hope you never have to use right? So, what happens if you do have to utilize coverage because of a damage?

Unfortunately, because homeowners insurance is necessary many homeowners rely solely on their agents to choose a policy that is right for them. This is totally fine, and works in many cases, but being educated on what your policy includes and doesn’t include is important.

Most policies are written and cover to repair or rebuild your home after damage. But what about ALL of the personal belongings inside of your home? Generally, your content coverage is 50 to 70 percent of the coverage that you carry on the structure of your home. In most cases this is a sufficient amount to cover personal items that are damaged, but in some cases it isn’t.

The best way to determine if you have enough content coverage is to conduct a home inventory. This is a much easier task thanks to modern technology. Walk through your home room by room and photograph all personal belongings. (TIP-If you picked your home up and turned it upside down, all items that would fall out are considered contents.) Open drawers and closets to photograph all items inside. You can catalog these items and keep them at an offsite location or you can download an app such as DreamVault and access it from any mobile device. This particular app is designed to house photos and information pertaining to each individual item, such as price, model and serial number. There is also a speech to text feature to help with documentation.

If you have jewelry, collector’s items, art or firearms, sometimes your coverage can fall short. Keep that in mind when documenting all items and reviewing your policy. If you find that your coverage is lacking you can generally purchase additional coverage or a rider for certain items.

When you have had damage to your home and personal belongings, you don’t want to worry with the added stress of insufficient coverage. Ensure that you are covered.

If you have damage to your home and/or personal items we are here to help.  Call our office and we will walk you through the process and make your damage “Like it never even happened.”

Flash Flooding And How It Affects You

1/31/2018 (Permalink)

Flash flooding occurs when there is a sudden influx of water onto normally dry land.

Flash flooding occurs when there is a sudden influx of water onto normally dry land. Flooding can happen for many reasons, including heavy rains, ocean waves, snow that melts too quickly or dams and levees that break. Floods are the most common and wide spread weather-related disasters.

Flooding can happen very quickly with little or no warning. The destructive power of a flood combined with unpredictability make them extremely dangerous. Flooding can occur anywhere that receives rain fall. In the United States floods kill more people each year than tornadoes, hurricanes or lightning.

What areas are at most risk from flooding?

Areas that are densely populated are at a high risk. Heavy construction and areas that have little to no dirt or grass that is not covered by concrete have nowhere for water to run off. In turn, instead of the water dissipating back into the ground it rises. In these densely populated areas if the streams have been re-routed underground and into storm drains they are at risk of overflowing and causing damage.

Areas near rivers are at risk. Levees are built along rivers and are used to prevent high water from flooding bordering land. If these levees are not maintained or the rains cause them to fail they cause devastating damage.

Mountains and steep hills produce a high amount of water runoff. If there are streams around these areas it causes them to rise quickly due to the rock and soil sediment. A creek or stream that at its regular depth might be 6”-7” can swell to a 10 foot raging river if a thunderstorm with heavy rain lingers.

Flood Alerts:

Flash Flood or Flood Watch-Flash flooding or flooding is possible within the designated watch area-be alert.

Flash Flood or Flood Warning-Flash flooding or flooding has been reported or is imminent-take necessary precautions at once! Get to higher ground.

Urban and Small Stream Advisory-Flooding of small streams, streets and low-lying areas, such as railroad underpasses and urban storm drains is occurring.

Flash Flood or Flood Statement-Follow-up information regarding a flash flood/flood event.

Ensuring that you are well educated on flooding and why it happens is the first step to safety. If you find yourself in a flood situation stay calm and get to higher ground.

How Clean are Your Air Ducts?

1/30/2018 (Permalink)

Your air ducts, you don’t see them, so they must be just fine. But they do see a lot of traffic, but do they need cleaned?

Your air ducts do need cleaned if you have these issues;

    • Permanent or long-term water damage.
    • Mold, mildew, or other microbial growth.
    • Debris buildup that restricts air-flow.
    • Dust, cobwebs, or other debris visibly blowing from duct work/registers.
    • Evidence of insect or rodent infestation.
    • Offensive odors from your duct work.
    • Frequent bouts of illness or allergies among your family A SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig technician will inspect each air duct, opening all access panels. We will clean supply ducts, return ducts, air vents, and diffusers. In all cases of duct cleaning, it is also necessary to address the source of the dirty air duct to prevent recurrence, including moisture, water, dust, debris, pest contamination, and other pollutants.
    • Want to reduce the need for duct cleaning?
    • During normal operation, dust can accumulate in duct work that can lead to microbial growth. Duct cleaning will reduce this growth, as well as increase the efficiency of your system.
    • Regularly change your air filter.
    • Regularly schedule annual professional maintenance and cleaning.
    • Maintain good housekeeping practices to reduce the likelihood of contaminants.
    • Ensure air intakes are properly located.
  • Have your duct work regularly inspected.

Why is it Important to Have a Fire Evacuation Plan

1/30/2018 (Permalink)

We hear a lot about smoke detectors. They are VERY important in a home safety plan. But do not forget the full Fire Evacuation Plan.

We hear all too often sad stories of houses catching fire and not everyone making it out safely.

This brings me to the main reason for this topic.  As we hear these stories and how the smoke detectors save people’s lives, we realized that a FULL PLAN of escape is necessary. So, when was the last time you and your family practiced an evacuation drill?  Maybe, it has been awhile. Please do not put this off any longer.  The main point is, it’s easy to forget about your overall evacuation plan. Please, take a few minutes and go over a Complete Fire Evacuation Plan with your family.

    • A closed door may slow the spread of smoke, heat and fire. Install smoke alarms in every sleeping room, outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home.
    • Everyone in the household must understand the escape plan. When you walk through your plan, check to make sure the escape routes are clear and doors and windows can be opened easily.
    • Choose an outside meeting place (i.e. neighbor's house, a light post, mailbox, or stop sign) a safe distance in front of your home where everyone can meet after they've escaped. Make sure to mark the location of the meeting place on your escape plan.
    • Go outside to see if your street number is clearly visible from the road. If not, paint it on the curb or install house numbers to ensure that responding emergency personnel can find your home.
    • Have everyone memorize the emergency phone number of the fire department. That way any member of the household can call from a neighbor's home or a cellular phone once safely outside.
    • If there are infants, older adults, or family members with mobility limitations, make sure that someone is assigned to assist them in the fire drill and in the event of an emergency. Assign a backup person too, in case the designee is not home during the emergency.
    • If windows or doors in your home have security bars, make sure that the bars have emergency release devices inside so that they can be opened immediately in an emergency. Emergency release devices won't compromise your security - but they will increase your chances of safely escaping a home fire.
    • Tell guests or visitors to your home about your family's fire escape plan.
    • Be fully prepared for a real fire: when a smoke alarm sounds, get out immediately.
  • Once you're out, stay out! Under no circumstances should you ever go back into a burning building. If someone is missing, inform the fire department dispatcher when you call. Firefighters have the skills and equipment to perform rescues.

Commercial Fire Preparedness

1/25/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial business owners everywhere know they must keep their fire protection systems up to code, but what happens when they don't?

A fire can break out at any time.  Faulty equipment or a careless employee, you must be prepared.  Maintaining your fire suppression system, as well as planning ahead, can save your business from extended closure following a fire.

There are many cases every year in which a lack of properly installed fire safety equipment leads to extensive damage from fires.  If your business isn't up-to-code on all of your sprinklers, suppression systems and alarms, your business could face disastrous consequences.

You also need to address the issue that businesses don't always prepare for - employee fire safety training.  An employee who has been trained can avoid the fire hazard, and possibly even fight the fire, using an extinguisher the right way.

Next, you must prepare for the aftermath.  By having a FREE Emergency Ready Profile conducted by your local SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig team, you are way ahead of the game.  This profile will expedite the cleanup and restoration services provided by SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig.  Contact our local office at (210) 610-6800 to schedule yours today.

What to do until SERVPRO arrives

1/25/2018 (Permalink)

A fire can leave behind soot, smoke damage and a host of other problems. Ceilings, walls, woodwork, carpeting, and floors will often need a thorough professional cleaning. If your home or business suffers a fire, it is important to take the appropriate steps to prevent further damage until your SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig professionals arrive. The following tips may help reduce damage and increase chances of a successful restoration.

DO:

Limit movement in the home to prevent soot particles from being embedded into upholstery and carpet.

Keep hands clean. Soot on hands can further soil upholstery, walls and woodwork.

Place dry, colorfast towels or old linens on rugs, upholstery and carpet traffic areas.

If electricity is off, empty freezer/refrigerator completely and prop doors open to help prevent odor.

Wipe soot from chrome kitchen/bathroom faucets, trim and appliances, then protect these surfaces with a light coating of lubricant.

If heat is off during winter, pour RV antifreeze in sinks, toilet bowls, holding tanks and tubs to avoid freezing pipes and fixtures.

Change HVAC filters; leave system off until a trained professional can check the system.

Tape double layers of cheesecloth over air registers to stop particles of soot from getting in or out of the HVAC system.

DON'T:

Don’t attempt to wash any walls or painted

surfaces without first contacting your SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig Professional.

Don’t attempt to shampoo carpet or upholstered furniture without first consulting your SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig Professional.

Do not attempt to clean any electrical appliances (TV sets, radios, etc.) that may have been close to fire, heat or water without first consulting an authorized repair service.

Do not consume any food or beverages that may have been stored close to fire, heat or water, as they may be contaminated.

If ceiling is wet, do not turn on ceiling fans.  Wiring may be wet or damaged and cause electrical shock, and air movement may create secondary damage.

Don’t send garments to the dry cleaner. Improper cleaning may set in smoke odor.
