Fire Escape plan

8/21/2022 (Permalink)

In the event of a fire, it is important that everyone in your building is able to make it out safely. Creating a fire escape plan is one way to help ensure this. The following steps can help.

  1. Locate All Exits
You should find any possible locations for getting out of the building. This will include the main entrances as well as fire escapes. On lower floors, windows may also be a safe option.
    2. Create Multiple Alternate Routes
Depending on where the fire is located, you may not be able to get to an exit using the path you would usually take. Make sure that you know at least two ways to get to each exit.
    3. Posts Maps in Each Room
During an emergency, you may find it difficult to determine the best way to get where you need to go. Posting maps of the building in each room and hallway can help. This can also be helpful for guests who do not know the layout of the building.
    4. Designate a Meetup Spot
Even if everyone follows the fire escape plan perfectly, you may not end up in the same place once you’re outside. Pick an area where everyone will go once they have exited the building. This will make it easier to determine who may still be inside.
    5. Practice Regularly
The best way to make sure that everyone will know what to do if a fire occurs is to practice your emergency escape plan regularly. This should be done at least every six months and should be as realistic as possible.
It is important to have a good fire escape plan and to make sure everyone is safe during a fire. Afterward, however, you may need to focus on the state of your building. If there is a fire or smoke damage, you should hire a fire damage remediation company to take care of it. They can perform cleanup and repairs to both the structure of the building and the objects inside. If your business has been damaged due to a disaster, we’re here to help. Contact us at any hour to report your damage or to learn more about our commercial restoration services.

Keeping your commercial property safe

8/20/2022 (Permalink)

External fire damage prevention remains a top priority for many businesses. While it is important to focus on preventing fires from igniting within the facility, external preventative measures should be considered as well. Since nearly every state has laws prohibiting smoking in public places, smoking occurs outside, often around the business by shrubbery and mulch. These fires can slow-burn for hours due to smoldering tunnels under the surface that later break out into open flame. Be mindful of the following tips to prevent fires from starting outside your business.

  • Keep the mulch at least 18 inches away from combustible building materials, such as wood and decks.
  • Provide proper receptacles for smoking materials at all entrances and in designated smoking at least 18 inches from the building and empty receptacles regularly.
  • Keep mulch beds moist when possible.

If you need to create a controlled fire outside, remember the following:

  • Don’t start open fires when the ground and surrounding vegetation are dry.
  • Don’t burn when winds are stronger than a gentle breeze.
  • Always have a strong water source ready in case a fire begins to get out of control.
  • Stay with the fire at all times.
  • When finished, rake through the ashes to ensure that all coals are cooled.

With these helpful tips, SERVPRO hopes your business remains free of fire damage. If you find yourself in an emergency, we're available to help reverse fire damage thoroughly and professionally.

Your commercial property loss

8/19/2022 (Permalink)

Each year, fire losses cost the commercial and industrial sectors $2.3 billion in direct property losses. Large-loss fires can occur, causing damage to buildings such as apartments, facilities, and workplaces.

Multiple lives are affected by such tragedies. Providing support might take a lot of time and effort on everyone's side.

Consider the following suggestions for commercial property owners:

Ascertain that everyone is safe and out of the property. The most important consideration is safety.

Involve the community in assisting families or workers who may be impacted.

Bring your adjuster in as soon as possible to assist with things like photos, mitigation, and documentation.

Examine all provisions, modifications, extensions, and exclusions in your insurance.

Bring in SERVPRO specialists to assess the damage.

Communication is critical.

To get the job done as quickly as possible, everyone should stay in touch.

Be aware that the procedure might be lengthy and requires a great deal of patience.

Make sure that your restaurant stands out with a small checklist.

8/19/2022 (Permalink)

restaurant Restaurant

In order to keep your restaurant in top form and ready for the next business day, you must strictly adhere to the nightly checklist. Every object in the kitchen, including the flooring, stovetops and ovens, cutlery, pots, and coffee makers, must be fully cleansed and shining clean on a daily basis.... Then there's the front of house, which includes the toilets, host stand, and bar area, which includes all of your glassware. Every day, however, you and your crew have everything under control.

It can also be difficult to find suitable flooring in a crowded restaurant. Many restaurants choose for hardwood flooring, which must be treated on a regular basis to prevent damage from high heels, spills, and scratches caused by table and chair movement.

Your establishment, on the other hand, might have carpeting. A nightly vacuum and spot cleaning will go a long way toward preventing mould growth and other issues that can produce odours, but your carpeting will still require a full cleaning on a regular basis to maintain your floors looking their best. Spills on carpet don't come up as readily or fully as they do on hardwood flooring, and a carpet in need of deep cleaning might appear dull and worn, with colours that are no longer as vibrant and fresh; this can have a negative impact on your guests' experience. Make sure to include a deep cleaning in your cleaning schedule!

Dealing with Cold Weather

8/19/2022 (Permalink)

Many business owners are concerned about the cold weather, particularly those that operate out of warehouse facilities with exposed pipes.

Freezing occurs as a result of cold weather, putting a business at risk of a burst pipe or water line. There are a few things you can do to keep your pipes from freezing.

1. Keep the doors shut.

While it may seem self-evident, keeping doors, particularly warehouse garage doors, closed during work hours is one of the most straightforward ways to avoid a frozen pipe. Water lines in warehouses are frequently exposed, and if they are not adequately insulated, they might freeze and possibly burst, causing substantial damage and expenditure.

2. Open a Small Amount of Faucets

When conditions are expected to be cold or below freezing, simply turning on the cold water supply on taps closest to the exterior water lines can reduce the chance of a frozen or burst pipe. Standing water freezes more easily than moving water.

3. Maintain a Consistent Temperature

Maintaining a constant temperature, no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit, is most likely the greatest strategy to keep your company's pipes from freezing. While decreasing the temperature of your business after hours or over the holidays may appear to be a cost-cutting measure, you may be placing your business at risk of water damage, which might result in considerable downtime.

4. Create a strategy.

Finally, if the worst happens despite your precautions, having an emergency plan in place is a good idea. While you can and should construct an emergency action plan and checklist in-house, you may also wish to call a restoration business, as many of them provide emergency planning services.

An initial examination of your property and the customisation of an action plan in the case of an emergency or disaster are often included in these services.

A burst pipe can be disastrous for a business, not just because of the damage but also because of the disruption in operations. It's as simple as keeping doors closed and opening a faucet when necessary to avoid a pipe rupture due to freezing and maintaining a steady temperature throughout your facility.

Spring is here, and as we head for summer powerful storms continue to make their way through the area. With these heavy storms there is always a lightning, lots of wind and of course flooding. This can be very bad news for your business.

Some of the storms start with light rain and then shift to more pronounced lines of showers and thunderstorms along with strong winds, causing damage to businesses throughout the region.
This can also mean power outages, which also doesn't help your business.

Natural Disaster: Is Your Small Business Protected?

8/19/2022 (Permalink)

Natural Disasters damages normally create water damage, Storm damage, unprecedented mold,  and/or accidental fires. We don't want any loss to occur to your business, but it is a topic that needs to be talked about. Unexpected property damage happens more often than we like.

During natural disasters, profits can be reduced as a result of lost sales and additional losses. Insurance does not cover all costs, and it is unable to replace customers who defect to a competition.

Here at SERVPRO, want to make sure that our community is prepared to face any obstacles.

Common Natural Disaster Damages

Wangari Maathai stated, “Mother Nature is very generous but very unforgiving“. Natural disasters have caused severe damages. Here are common natural damages that have impacted small businesses in your area

Flood + Storm Damage

Damage caused by strong winds and heavy rain can remove roof tiles, break windows, and more. Depending on how severe the storm is, flood remediation might be needed, aka water remediation/mitigation services.

Water damage mitigation services commonly consist of drying, cleaning, and sanitizing contaminated areas and items. Following that, materials that have been damaged are repaired. This preserves the structural integrity of water-damaged floors, walls, and ceilings. Restoration work starts after the remediation process is completed and continues until your property is completely restored to its pre-flood condition.

Carpets and Upholstery Cleaning

Carpets and Upholstery Cleaning

Even the highest-quality carpet and upholstery can show soiling over time. Protect your investment by calling us to clean and maintain your carpet and upholstery. The SERVPRO System offers a number of cleaning options to match any type of upholstery or carpet.

Need Carpet or Upholstery Cleaning?

Call Today – (210) 610-6800

We also offer a range of specialized cleaning methods:

  • Bonnet Cleaning: A less aggressive method for short piled carpets.
  • Hot Water Extraction: A deeper cleaning method for all carpet types.
  • Deluxe Precondition and Rinse: Helps restore deeply soiled areas.
  • Showcase Premier Cleaning: The most thorough cleaning method in the industry.
  • Dry Cleaning: When color-fastness is an issue.

Preventative Maintenance

Carpets act as a filter, trapping dust, dirt, gases, animal hair, and other soils. All carpet manufacturers agree on actions you can take between carpet cleanings to increase the life span of your carpet.

IICRC states that 79% of soil in carpet is dry soil. Vacuuming is a key component to proper care and maintenance of carpet.

Preventative maintenance actions include:

  • Regular vacuuming
  • Spot removal
  • Piloting the carpet to prevent matting
  • Moving furniture to change traffic patterns
  • Using walk-off mats to limit the amount of soil tracked onto the carpet

Professional Cleaning

Our professional cleaning can address moderate and heavy soil conditions in your carpets. How often you’ll need professional cleaning depends on soil build-up, traffic, type and color of carpeting. A good rule of thumb would be to professionally clean your carpet every 12 months. The best advice is to clean carpets before they become totally saturated with soil. If you wait until carpets look really dirty, the carpets may never be restored to their former appearance. Dirt builds up in layers, and when a carpet looks dirty you are only seeing the dirt at the tips of the fibers. More dirt is hiding below the surface down near the base of the pile, causing damage to the carpet. When a carpet is saturated with dirt, the soil has penetrated crevices and has become firmly lodged.

We will get the job done right. For a cleaning backed by state-of-the-art equipment, over 40 years of experience and Professionals trained to the highest standards, call us today. SERVPRO of Universal City/St. Hedwig is here to help you. (210) 610-6800.

How Extreme Cold Can Affect Your Business

1/25/2021

This year we've seen colder than normal temps in our area and while we might enjoy a break from the heat, you always want to be prepared for those days of extreme cold temperatures. Did you know that your place of business can become damaged due to winter weather and extreme cold, your personal health & the health of your customers are also at risk. Based on a report done by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), they estimated that in recent years, U.S. death rates in winter months have been 8 to 12 percent higher than in non-winter months. Much of this increase relates to seasonal changes in behavior and the human body, as well as increased exposure to respiratory diseases. Cold temperatures can also worsen pre-existing medical conditions such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases. For example, death rates from heart attacks increase as temperatures drop, likely due to the way cold affects blood circulation, blood vessels, and other factors With information like this, you must be aware of what could happen in your business should water damage or fire damage cut off your heat source. The two main conditions to be aware of are frostbite and hypothermia. Frostbite is caused when your skin is exposed to extremely cold temperatures. Physical symptoms are white or grayish-yellow skin, skin that feels unusually firm, or waxy numbness. Hypothermia is when your body temperature falls to an abnormally low temperature, caused by long exposure to cold weather. Signs of hypothermia include shivering, exhaustion, confusion, fumbling hands, memory loss, slurred speech, and drowsiness. If someone’s body temperature is below 95°F, seek medical attention immediately. We understand that a loss of heat from an emergency can affect your business. If you experience an emergency, know our team is ready to help you get your business back up and running.

Frozen Pipes in Your Commercial Business

Frozen Pipes in Your Commercial Business

1/25/2021

Frozen pipes in your business can be a big mess. When pipes freeze, they expand and may burst, leading to major water repairs. While our team will always be there to help mitigate these emergencies when they occur, we want to do what we can to provide information to you that can potentially help keep your business out of these situations.

Tips to prevent frozen pipes:

  • Water conservationists’ frown on allowing faucets to drip, but letting even a small amount of water to flow through pipes at all times can do a lot to prevent pipes from freezing. A steady drip is all that is needed to keep the pipes free from ice accumulation.
  • Many pipes do not have proper insulation to prevent them from freezing in cold weather. Pipe sleeves and heating tape can be applied to insulate the pipes. It is also a good precautionary measure to caulk around gaps where cold drafts can affect pipe temperatures.
  • Shut off any outside water sources that you don't need, especially if you are expecting particularly low temperatures. When a building is left unattended, make sure the thermostat is set no lower than 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Open cabinet doors under sinks and in storage areas to allow heat from the room to circulate uninsulated pipes.

Dealing with frozen pipes:

  • Hairdryer – This is one of the safest and most effective ways to thaw a pipe. Open the faucet and then heat the pipe by working back toward the area where the blockage has occurred.
  • Space heater – A small heater can work much faster than a hairdryer. Simply direct the heater toward the frozen area of the pipe.

Make sure you and your employees know where the shut off valve is located. If you are dealing with frozen pipes or water damage from frozen pipes in your commercial building, call SERVPRO of Universal City/St. Hedwig as soon as possible.

Cooking

Cooking is a huge danger, and it was a culprit behind 30,900 fires within the past decade. This is why it is so important to install fire alarms and a sprinkler system in your kitchen to prevent against the worst!

Unintentional and Careless Behavior

Heavy Rainfall Brings Water Damage

Heavy Rainfall Brings Water Damage

1/26/2021

While water damage is typically associated with events like flooding or plumbing malfunctions, heavy rain can also cause its own set of issues regarding water damage around the house.

While any level of moisture can cause damage, heavy rain is considered rainfall at rates over 0.3 inches per hour and can work its way into much smaller vulnerabilities in your home. To help you better prepare and avoid water damage, we have put together a list of how these rapid rainfall rates can cause issues.

How Heavy Rains Cause Household Water Damage

Backup of clogged gutters

Clogged gutters can cause significant damage to your home after heavy rains. If there is debris in the gutters, it will be difficult for water to drain away, which can then result in leaks from puddles as the water is left standing against the roofline.

Leaks around windows and doors

Windows and doors are supposed to be sealed against the elements, but as their weatherproofing ages, it can deteriorate as well. When heavy rains roll through, water can find its way into minuscule cracks and cause damages.

Poor drainage around the foundation

If your home is at the bottom of a hill or does not have adequate drainage around the foundation, heavy rains can build up against the base of your home and lead to leaks in your basement or crawl spaces.

Leaks in and around the roof

Roof leaks are one of the leading consequences of heavy rains, and they can sneak up suddenly. All it takes is for a shingle to be scraped away or a weak spot to form and rainwater can begin seeping in as it falls.

Malfunctioning of a sump pump system

For homes with sump pumps, doing regular maintenance and checking for issues is key—otherwise, the pump system can get overwhelmed and will not be able to effectively move water away from the home.

Leaks around chimneys and skylights

Houses with chimneys and skylights tend to be more vulnerable to heavy rains than homes without them. While they are nice features to have, the seals where they meet with the roof can grow vulnerable over time and become overwhelmed when rainfall is heavy.

Remember to stay safe and get excess water cleaned up professionally to minimize the chance of mold growth. Our Team at SERVPRO of Universal City/St. Hedwig is ready to assist at a moment's notice with any of your water mitigation emergencies. Give our team a call at (210) 610-6800. Protecting Your Business from a Storm

1/26/2021

Have you taken steps to protect your business and employees?

When we experience a thunderstorm in San Antonio, TX  they can potentially cause extensive damage to your business. Power outages downed tree limbs, and flooding from rainstorms are all possibilities. SERVPRO of Universal City/St. Hedwig has a few preventative steps you can take to ensure you are able to protect your business when these storms happen.

  1. Keep Your Lightning Rod Maintained:

lightning rod is a metal rod mounted on a structure and intended to protect the structure from a lightning strike. If lightning hits the structure, it will preferentially strike the rod and be conducted to ground through a wire, instead of passing through the structure, where it could start a fire or cause electrocution. If your business is located in a tall building that may attract lightning, then maintaining the lightning rod can be essential. Have the rod checked annually for damage and ask your certification professionals to verify that it is up to code. If your business is located in an area where lightning is common, it is wise to have the unit cleaned and inspected at least twice a year.  2. Maintain All Trees on the Property:  High winds can turn tree limbs into projectiles that may shatter your building’s windows and cause serious injury to your customers or employees. Make sure you are maintaining your landscaping so dead branches do not detach and strike people entering your business below. Trimming trees away from your building’s power lines can protect its power source during a thunderstorm 3. Have a Flood Plan in Place: Having a flood plan in place can possibly prevent flooding in your business, especially in the case of mitigation services. Contacting SERVPRO of Universal City/St. Hedwig before the wet season can be a wise choice because if your building should experience flooding, our team can have help on hand right away.

Top Causes of Commercial Fires

1/26/2021

Fire damage to your commercial business can be catastrophic. It does not matter what your business does, it can mean downtime, loss of goods, costly equipment loss, loss of property, or worse. A fire can quickly move through a building and even put your team at risk. If you are not prepared it can be a situation that escalates faster than you are ready to handle. Good planning can help ensure that a fire does not happen or if it does, how it can be handled quickly and effectively. Below the United States Fire Administration has listed the top five leading causes of a commercial fire.

Top causes of fires in commercial buildings

According to data from the United States Fire Administration, between 2006 and 2015, the top causes of fires in commercial buildings were:

Cooking

Cooking is a huge danger, and it was a culprit behind 30,900 fires within the past decade. This is why it is so important to install fire alarms and a sprinkler system in your kitchen to prevent against the worst!

Unintentional and Careless Behavior

This is a broad category. Unintentional and careless behavior, better known as accidents, caused more than 10,900 fires. While it’s hard to stop people from being careless, business owners and property managers can’t afford to be.

Arson

Intentionally set fires represented 9,800 of the total fires in these properties.

Electrical malfunction

Problems with the electricity or wiring in a building caused around 7,000 fires in the past decade.

Heating problems

Problematic HVAC systems are the culprit behind about 6,000 commercial fires nationwide.

Trust that SERVPRO of Universal City/St. Hedwig  keeps in mind that time down for your business is money lost. So our team will work around the clock to make sure it is “Like it never even happened,” and your business is back up and running!

Heavy Rainfall Brings Water Damage

1/25/2021 (Permalink)

2. Can a Local Restoration Company Meet the Water Damage Needs of a Large Business?

6/1/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO Has the Scalable Workforce and Extensive Equipment Inventory to Respond to Any Size Disaster

When large commercial buildings spread out over one or more business campuses confront a substantial water loss, their owners reach out for professional help. A supply line break or waste backup flooding acres is not a routine cleaning job. Who can handle a massive undertaking on a local level?

Who Can You Rely Upon for Comprehensive Water Removal, Cleaning, and Drying?

Universal City commercial water cleanup has a tight time frame, with little room for false starts. Lining up multiple contractors for a nearly endless variety of challenges is not the answer. Finding a reliable mitigation and remediation company that can handle all aspects of water removal and structural drying is preferable.

Common Sources of Water Damage in a Commercial Building

6/1/2020 (Permalink)

Owning and running a building in the Universal City area means that you have a lot on your plate. You probably want to avoid reacting to problems, but instead nip them in the bud.

When It Comes to Water Damage, How Do You Do That?

Drainage

Bathrooms and kitchens in a place of business get a lot of traffic. This means that your drains and toilets are doing a lot of work, so you should do what you can to keep them flowing and avoid flooding. Have maintenance check on them regularly and consider conducting a camera-scope inspection every so often. Some tips to avoid a clogged toilet:

  • Buy thin toilet paper.
  • Post signage about what can go in the toilet.
  • Provide plenty of labelled waste receptacles.

Pipes

First, you should look into what type of pipes you have. If they are older, they might be polybutylene, copper or galvanized iron. These materials are prone to damage and don't usually last long. Please consider replacing if this is the case. Regardless of material, it is important to check them for corrosion or leaks as often as possible, because even the smallest drip can accumulate. Winters can also be hard on pipes, so be sure to keep your building warm enough to avoid freezing and broken pipes.

Fire Sprinklers

Sometimes your sprinklers can be triggered to go off without a fire- a warm light nearby or burnt food in the microwave can do the trick. This can cause water damage, especially if not taken care of right away. You should have a water damage restoration company picked out so you can move forward right away with water repair should something like this happen. Especially if the incident was above a carpet, this may eventually turn into a mold problem.
There's a lot to keep track of in a large building. If you know what to add to a regular maintenance routine and some simple preventative measures, your life could be made a lot simpler.

Call SERVPRO For Your Commercial Sewage Backup Disaster

3/9/2020 (Permalink)

Flood damage can occur in many forms for a San Antonio home or business. The worst occurrence might be a sewage backup and the safety hazards it brings.

Sewer backups in the San Antonio area can happen due to a blockage in a main drain or sewer line. If a toilet is being treated as a waste basket or a grease is poured down the drain, clogging occurs, inciting possible home and commercial sewer backups. Tree roots are another common cause as they grow into pipes and holes with available space. As with any potential water disaster, irregular maintenance to broken or cracked pipes and lines are all conditions contributing to sewer backup damage.

Regardless of the source, a sewer backup in your San Antonio home or business means sewage cleanup. City and town sewages are shared and can encompass a multitude of biohazard contaminants. Immediate cleanup and decontamination is necessary to mitigate any long-term damage caused by a sewage emergency. Health concerns are evident, both airborne and water-borne. Sitting water also leads to damaged infrastructures, allowing the opportunity for mold to grow. After safely evacuating anyone inhabiting the property at that time, calling a restoration services company in the San Antonio area to survey the emergency flooding, is essential to keep your business running. Often property owners may make the costly error of attempting to fix the root issue themselves. This can be dangerous health wise and cause further destruction.

Disaster Restoration companies like SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig, are properly trained and equipped to remove, dispose, and clean any biohazard properties caused by a sewage backup. Clean up may include any removal, drying, dehumidifying or disinfecting of sheetrock, drywall, carpet, tile or furnishings. As harmful microorganisms are a major concern when dealing with biohazard material, safety suits and equipment are a mandated standard.

Escape Plan for Your Business

2/4/2020 (Permalink)

An emergency escape plan is not required for all businesses, however, OSHA recommends building an emergency action plan to protect yourself, your employees, and your business during an emergency. OSHA suggests the following steps when developing such a plan:

  1. Organize an Emergency Preparedness Procedures review with employees to review your company's emergency plans. You may wish to select an individual or team of individuals to lead and coordinate your emergency plan.
  2. Once a plan is developed, post evacuation procedures, including routes and exits, where they are easily accessible to all employees. Ensure all exits and routes are clearly marked and well lit, wide enough to accommodate the number of evacuating personnel, and unobstructed and clear of debris at all times.
  3. Conduct office evacuation exercises and drills. Designate a safe spot outside of the facility where employees can regroup, recover and conduct a head count. Once completed, evaluate how well the plan worked and if additional training or exercises are needed.

These tips are provided by the National Fire Protection Association and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Are Mold Remediation and Mold Removal the Same Thing?

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

Mold cleanup is referred to as remediation rather than removal for a scientific reason: you can’t get rid of mold spores. The naturally occurring, microscopic entities are present everywhere indoors and outdoors. Once black mold or any other colony has grown in your establishment, mold remediation must immediately begin in order to limit the spread of the mold. While each situation is unique, here are six general steps a professional cleanup and restoration company will take to rid your San Antonio, Tx business of its fungal presence:

1. Inspection

Mold remediation experts will assess the property for noticeable signs of mold. A variety of technology can be utilized to detect the subliminal signs of mold, often found behind interior walls or under carpeted floors.

2. Containment

The HVAC system and fans will be turned off to prevent the spread of mold spores through airways. The contaminated area will be closed with technology tactics and physical barriers to contain the mold within a restricted area.

3. Filtration

Possible irritants contained in black mold can spread to the surrounding air. Using advanced filtration technology, workers will capture the microscopic spores to filter air during the cleanup process.

4. Removal

Dependent on the amount of mold growth some building materials may have to be removed and disposed of. Porous materials such as carpet, drywall or wood can retain the moisture and spores that led to the original mold growth. For safety and prevention of returning mold, materials damaged by black mold must be removed.

5. Cleaning
In-depth cleaning of restorable items includes specialized cleaning methods, disinfection and sanitizing and thorough drying. Any lingering odors can be removed with fogging equipment.

6. Restoration

Full restoration minimizes the threat of mold returning through thoroughly cleaning and drying effected materials. However, significant mold damage could require replacement of drywall, subflooring or other porous building materials that could retain mold spores.

Contents Damaged by a Flood? Follow these Precautions!

6/3/2019 (Permalink)

If your building was recently flooded, it is understandable that you may want to act fast to start cleaning your contents. After all, the longer you wait to clean your items, the more money you lose. However, content cleaning a flooded company should not be taken lightly. Whether you’re dealing with a flood caused by a broken pipe or one caused by sewage backup, there are certain precautions you need to take:

• Review basic hygiene procedures.
• Invest in personal protective gear.
• Train your employees on disease prevention.
• Know when to call in the professionals.

Basic Hygiene Procedures

If you and your employees attempt to clean up the mess on your own, it’s crucial that you take precautions to protect your health. Some things you can do to clean up your flooded company include the following:

• Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water immediately after coming into contact with human waste or sewage.
• Do not touch your face, eyes, mouth or open sores while handling contaminated water.
• Remove soiled work clothes as soon as you’re done cleaning and before you do anything else or go anywhere else.
• Do not chew gum or smoke tobacco while handling sewage or human waste.
• Invest in dry cleaning to thoroughly clean contaminated clothes.

Protective Personal Gear You Need

Knowing how and when to clean your hands and clothing is not enough. You also need to know how to handle contaminated water or, more importantly, what gear you need to safely do so. Equipment you will need includes these items:

• Rubber boots and gloves
• Liquid repellent coveralls
• Goggles
• Protective face mask

Conduct the Proper Training

Though you should always rely on a professional San Antonio, TX, water remediation team for content cleanup, it doesn’t hurt to train your workers in safe techniques and basic hygiene practices. A portion of training should focus heavily on when to seek medical attention and recognizing signs of waste-borne illnesses.

If you’re dealing with a flooded company, the best thing you can do for you and your employees’ safety is hire a San Antonio, TX, remediation team. The professionals are properly trained and have adequate protection.

The Top 5 Commercial Water Damage Prevention Tips

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Commercial building owners and tenants should try to prevent damage from any water source. This type of damage may disrupt the functionality and undermine the safety of a property in San Antonio, TX. Whether you are a commercial building owner or tenant, here are five water damage prevention tips to follow.

1. Protect the building envelope. The envelope or exterior of a building include the windows, walls, and roof. Make sure that water does not penetrate through any of these parts of the structure.

2. Approach landscaping and location from a strategic perspective. The situation of a building can be an essential factor to keep in mind when selecting or designing a commercial property. Water tends to flow downhill and should drain away from the foundation of the building.

3. Maintain HVAC systems. If the HVAC system in a commercial property is dated, it may not be as efficient or capable of meeting the demands of recent buildings. Condensate drains and drain pains should lead away from the structure and occupants should try to prevent clogs and water damage. Roof drains should drain away from the structure. Ductwork should not have any indications of condensation, excess moisture, or rust.

4. Regularly inspect rooftop drainage. If a roof cannot drain completely, pooling water may work its way under roofing materials, causing damage and undermining the integrity of the roof. Ensure that downspouts and drains are clear and that there is no standing water on the roof.

5. Have plumbing components inspected on a regular basis. It is important to check major connections, particularly water main supply lines. Look for any signs of leaks or broken pipes.

These tips limit the likelihood of water damage in a commercial property in San Antonio, Tx. If damage does occur, keep contact information for a plumber and commercial restoration company, like SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig, that provides water cleanup services on hand.

3 Reasons To Hire Certified Water Damage Experts

6/26/2018 (Permalink)

Give SERVPRO of Universal City / St. Hedwig a call if you experience a water damage in your home or commercial property. (210) 610-6800

Certified companies that specialize in water cleanup are likely to hold an Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification, a Commercial Structure Drying credential, or a Mold Remediation certification. The standards for these credentials are set by experts in human health and structural restoration. Here are three reasons why you should hire a certified water damage expert if you experience a broken pipe, leaky roof, or sewer flooding.

Insurance companies are more likely to cover the costs of certified commercial restoration. Insurance companies typically trust certified professionals to perform water cleanup and damage repair work more quickly and with greater success than services without up-to-date cleaning and restoration certifications.

Certified companies are also more likely to guarantee their work.

Certified experts can work efficiently after water damage. Every second counts when you are dealing with water damage. Regardless of the source of the leak, it is important to remove standing water and to clean, dry, and dehumidify the parts of a commercial property affected by a leak as quickly as possible. Significant damage can occur and mold may begin to develop in 24 to 48 hours if experts do not complete drying and cleaning procedures.

Less secondary damage occurs when certified experts follow best restoration practices. Just as mold is less likely to develop if the affected area is quickly dried and cleaned, the extent of water damage to building materials or content may be less severe if experts arrive on the scene in a timely manner.

If your commercial property in San Antonio, TX has experienced water damage, you should call a certified water damage restoration service to schedule water cleanup as soon as possible. Check the website of the service you are thinking about hiring or contact the company by phone to find out which cleaning and restoration certifications it holds.
